Accessible EV Parking

Included in the 2022 infrastructure bill is a plan to build a nationwide network of 500,000 electric vehicle chargers. As state and federal governments continue to incentivize the use of electric vehicles, the demand for infrastructure to power those vehicles is increasing at a rapid rate. This has led to the installation of many new EV charging stations throughout the country. Unfortunately, accessibility is often overlooked and failure to provide accessible EV Charging Stations can lead to significant and costly challenges.

Whenever new technologies come along, the regulatory requirements for constructing and maintaining architectural elements are often misunderstood. This is especially true for accessibility because there are so many different codes that may be applicable. A property that provides accessible EV charging stations may only be required to comply with the ADA. But depending on the location, ownership, funding, occupancy and alteration history, that site may also be required to comply with the ABA, FHA, Title 24 just to name a few. Our Certified Access Specialist (CASp) are very knowledgable about the latest state and federal requirements for accessible EVCS. We assist architects, contractors and property owners with accessibility compliance from plan review through final inspection so that all parties have the peace of mind that the work is done right.

We highly recommend that our clients working on an EV project, consult with our Certified Access Specialists as early in the design phase as possible. This will prevent project delays and significant changes to the original design if done improperly the first time.

The US Access Board published a 2022 technical assistance document for accessible EVCS. This document is a helpful resource for understanding the intent of accessible EVCS design.

Be aware that this document does not address state and local requirements that may be more restrictive.
